How to Beat the Winter Work Blues
As we head into February many folks are experiencing the winter blues. Winter blues are caused by a variety of factors including cold weather and a reduction in sunlight. If you live in a colder climate you are more likely to experience the blues and/or a lack of motivation. Here are some tips to reduce those winter blues and improve your energy.
Stay Social
During the winter months it is easy to want to stay warm and cozy in your home and not venture out into the icy cold weather. However, staying home rather than socializing with friends and family can actually make you feel isolated and alone. Sticking to your social schedule and making an effort to interact in-person with your social circle can raise your spirits and improve your mindset. This goes for work as well! Whether you work from home or in the office, make it a priority to take your work breaks and reach out to your co-workers. Enjoy a laugh, have some fun and keep in touch with others, it helps the time pass and can put a smile on your face!
Get Moving
Exercise improves your mood! In fact, studies show that aerobic exercise such as walking, running, swimming, biking and dancing can help reduce anxiety and depression. Whether you walk on your treadmill, take a dance class or go ice skating, it will improve your mood! Make it a priority to get moving for 30 minutes a day and enjoy the benefits including better sleep, stress reduction and increased endurance.
Enjoy Your Z’s
A good sleep goes a long way. Sleep is directly related to your mood, your energy level and your mindset. Having a bedtime routine can make a huge difference in the quality of sleep that you get. Whether it means going to bed earlier, turning off your phone notifications, reading before bed or cutting out the caffeine after 5pm, it is important to focus on changes that will result in an overall better sleep. A better sleep results in a happier you!
Eat Healthy Meals
If every meal is a grab n’ go meal then you may be missing out on some important and vital nutrients. Vitamin supplements are great – but don’t stop there. Eating a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help play a role in ensuring you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function optimally.
Reduce Stress
Are you feeling stressed at work or at home? Make a list of the stressors in your life and see if there are ways to reduce them. Many of us put great pressure on ourselves to be perfect – perfect at work and perfect at home and that can lead to increased stress and anxiety. If you feel stressed and do not know why, try writing in a journal each day to discover more about how you are feeling and why you are feeling that way.
The winter months can be a very big challenge to many of us and there are several ways to reduce the stress, anxiety and winter blues that often accompany the coldest months of the year. Try a few of the tips above to help you feel healthier and happier this winter.
