Mental Health Tips For Customer Service Employees

Working in customer service can be both very rewarding and very demanding. Here are some simple tips to help your customer service team manage stress in the workplace.

Focus on overall wellness

Good mental health isn’t just in your head. Stress can affect your physical health as well as your mental health, so focusing on overall wellness can help keep your customer service team healthier in a multitude of ways.

  • Offer healthy, nutritious snacks instead of junk food during meetings and breaks.
  • Create an environment that encourages movement. Keeping active can help bust stress and keep spirits high.
  • Foster a sense of calm whenever possible. Soothing, quiet music in the office and essential oil diffusers can create a relaxing environment for your team to work in.
  • Let in the light. Dark workplaces can lower your mood and a lack of sunlight can contribute to a lack of Vitamin D, which can affect mood. If you don’t have windows in your office, consider investing in a few extra lamps to boost your lighting.

Make mental health a priority

It can be difficult to talk about our mental health, but there are almost always warning signs that someone might be struggling. Repeated bouts of lateness, bursts of anger or frustration, and poor work performance can all be indicators that an employee is struggling with their mental well-being.

If mental health issues such as depression and stress aren’t addressed, they can make your employees physically unwell and incapable of doing their jobs. Unhappy, stressed-out employees also make bad judgment calls regarding customer service, so this can have a negative impact on your customers, too.

The most important thing you can do to improve mental health in your customer service employees is to break down the walls around the subject. The less taboo mental health issues seem the more likely your employees will be to get help before they encounter serious problems.
